Radial Bearings

How Radial Bearing Works?

Active Magnetic Bearings Technology

Action of radial and axial bearings
In practice, these attractions are balanced in order to maintain a gap between the shaft (rotor) and static parts (stator).

the attraction (top, bottom) of radial electromagnets

the attraction (left, right) of the axial electromagnets

Principle of the radial bearing
  • The center of the radial bearing is defined by the crossing of V and W axis.
  • The function of the magnetic bearing is to locate the shaft's rotation axis in the center, reacting to any load variation (external disturbance forces), as shown in the next sketch.

Position stabilization by feedback control
  • The position sensors are sending shaft position signals to a control system. In return, the control system modulates the current in each electromagnet to vary its force and thus bring the rotor back in the required position.
