Aircraft Bearings

Every
bearing used in an aircraft is considered important. Aircraft bearings are
precision bearings that range from miniature bearings to spherical bearings.
These bearings are used in wheels, seats, controls carriages and flight
instruments etc.
The aircraft bearings need to comply with certain standards like high
precision angular contact, they need to be separable type. They need to have
plain lined or unlined bushings and sleeves. These and many other standards
need to be maintained for safety reasons. General precision aerospace
bearings normally take the form of deep groove or cylindrical roller
bearings and are used in hydraulic and engine/APU applications.
- Ball bearing types are used extensively throughout aircraft
airframe and engine design. They are the most versatile and well
engineered.
- Amongst roller bearings, cylindrical roller bearings, taper
roller bearings or certain specialist roller devices are used for
different applications.
- Cylindrical roller bearings are found in pumps, engines, engine
gearboxes or auxiliary power units. They are all suitable for medium
speed applications.
- Taper roller bearings are most commonly used in wheel
applications for all aircraft. Their ability to take radial and
axial loads is unmatched.
- Aircraft door mechanism, undercarriage, flaps and slats are
places where roller bearings are used.
- Needle roller bearings for aircraft are found in the wings, on
the slat and flap carriages. Their ability to support high vibratory
loads and is rather compact.
